May 2014 Favourites!

It honestly felt like just yesterday that I was putting together my April favourites post. Now a month later it is time to share the things that have been worth my money this month! Enjoy.

Beauty/ Makeup:
Barry M Hi-Shine Jelly Nail Polish in Guava
It is no secret that I adore the nail polishes by Barry M. A few months back I actually bought a few more shades after noticing  that Barry M had added some new colours to their Gelly Hi-Shine collection. One of these was the shade 'Guava' and it has been by far my favourite nail polish this month. The colour is an incredible teal/blue colour and it lasts ages! Costing only £3.99 this product is worth every penny.
 I've found that like with the other polishes in this  collection that two coats of this stuff is plenty and the dry time is also really good.

 

 

 

 

Real Techniques Brushes

For Christmas I was lucky enough to receive a collection of the Real Techniques brushes from my sister. Although I was really excited about trying them I thought it would be a good idea to wait until I had built my collection a little more and to be honest I didn't want them to get dirty! However this month I realised that this was a ridiculous thought and started to use them religiously to apply my makeup. I particularly love the contour brush, as it blends product really well and gives me a really defined look. Next I would like to buy the set of eye brushes which would help me to apply my eye shadow better especially because I have been a bit more experimental this month.  

Sleek Blush in Flushed
My final beauty favourite this month has been a blush from Sleek. After discovering Sleek blushes in the middle of last year and having loved the shade Flamingo so much I decided it was time to try out the other shades in the collection.
  This month I have really enjoyed using the shade 'Flushed.' Unlike Flamingo this is a much darker shade but is still a beautiful pinky shade. It gives my complexion a really healthy glow and looks so natural on my face. Although I find myself having to apply more of this than with Flamingo, I think it is because Flamingo is so much brighter than this. I like that the colour isn't as bright though because it means that you can gradually build it up depending on your skin tone and the look you are achieving. This shade is also a lot more matt than Flamingo but it still contains the slightest bit of shimmer in it as well. The price of these blushes are also a huge plus point costing only £4.49 each.



Fashion:
Kimonos
Up until this month, I had never owned a Kimono. I'm not sure why, but they just didn't appeal to me and I never thought that I could pull one off and was worried that they wouldn't flatter my shape or that I would feel too self conscious in one. However, whilst I was shopping this month a came across one in New Look. The print instantly attracted me because it was full of greens and purples and was a gorgeous Hawaiian floral style. The material was also really soft to touch and as my friend was going to be trying on some stuff I decided to try this out. When I tried it on I really liked it and so bought it for £12.99.
  Since then I have been back into New Look and bought another kimono because I loved my first one so much. My second kimono is more of a sheer material, but is once again a floral print combining cream, a pinky/nude tone and also a beautiful royal blue too. This one was a little more expensive at £24.99 but it's been perfect for Spring. 
Forever 21 Vest
Up until now I have been obsessed with wearing a printed vest from Pull & Bear because it has been so comfortable and easy to wear. Whilst shopping with friends this month I found a new vest which I have fallen in love with from Forever 21. I think it cost around £10 and I really like the print and think it will be perfect for summer. It is cut quite low at the sides so I have been experimenting with bandeau tops underneath to add something different too.
Statement Jewellery
My final fashion related favourite product this month has been statement necklaces. I have never been a jewellery person really in terms of necklaces but after discovering this wing necklace from River Island this month I have been converted. Although it isn't the biggest statement necklace in the world I think it still makes an impact on a simple outfit and I love the detailing on it too. It cost me only £7 and I can't wait to start buying more necklaces.



Music:
The 1975
How has it taken me this long to discover the genius that is the 1975's self titled album? This album has been out in the UK now for ages, yet this month I started to listen to it for the first time. It only took a few songs to realise that I would love this album and I have been listening to it on repeat throughout the month alongside my other music favourites. Some of my favourite songs from the album are 'Robbers' and 'Girls' although I have liked almost every song!
Mr Probz: Waves
I am a huge fan of songs that you love the moment that you first hear them. Although I do eventually like songs even if I haven't when they were first played it was not the case with the release of Waves. I really liked this song as soon as I first heard it and although now I have started to over play it a bit I have been listening to it a lot throughout May.
Sam Smith: Stay With Me
I will be the first to admit that I wasn't overly keen on 'Money On My Mind' by Sam Smith. I didn't think the verses were too bad but along with the chorus which I didn't like and the radio station over playing the song up to 7 times a day everyday for 3 weeks I dreaded to hear it. However, this month I discovered the song 'Stay With Me' and I have been listening to it on repeat ever since. It is so much different to MOMM and I think it is really beautiful to listen to.
The Vamps: Meet The Vamps
Although The Vamps featured in my April favourites I couldn't resist putting them into my May Favourites as well. Last month I was raving about their performance in Radio 1's Live Lounge but since then their debut album has been released in the UK. I bought this album alongside The 1975's and although they are both completely different I have been enjoying these a lot. The Vamps album is really fun with a mix of upbeat and slightly more serious songs. For a band so young I think their album is incredible and there hasn't been a 'bad' song that I've listened to. Big favourites of mine have been 'Somebody to You', 'Shout About It', 'Dangerous' and 'Lovestruck.'


Films/TV:
Bad Neighbours
I don't go to the cinema very often and so when I do it is because I am going to see a film that I really wanted to see. At the start of the month Bad Neighbours starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen came out and so my friends and I went to watch it. I won't give too much away apart from the fact that it is hilarious and you should go watch it!
Modern Family
My final TV/Film favourite is a program which is regularly shown on Sky 1 and Sky 2. Modern family is a show which follows three families which are all related in one way or another it follows their lives and choices. It is hilarious and unique in that one as the storyline is played out the characters narrate and comment on their thoughts and actions. My sister has been watching this program for years and I can't believe it has taken me this long to give it a chance. I think it is brilliant. 

First Purchases of 2014 (Makeup Haul)

 

So with Christmas over for another year and having received my bank statement for December (ouch!) it's that time of year where you decide that you really need to save some money after spending so much during the festive season.

Apparently I didn't get that memo and I've been out shopping over the past few weeks and have brought some amazing cosmetics which I'm going to share today.

 

The first thing that I've purchased were these makeup wipes from Superdrug. Recently I've been using some Sainsbury's own branded wipes just because they are cheap and easy to pick up, but I decided I should probably invest in some wipes that are actually designed to be used to take off makeup. These were also a complete bargain at only about £1.50 and although I have never used them before I thought that they would be worth the risk.

 

My obsession with nail polish continues. Barry M have recently released a new collection of matte polishes in a variety of colours. Their new polishes always intrigue me and after buying loads of their standard as well as jelly polishes I just needed to try this one. I picked up the shade 'Vanilla' costing me £3.99 from Superdrug.   

 

As Superdrug were having a 3 for 2 offer on all their Barry M products, it would be rude for me not to buy two more polishes. For my second polish I decided on this gorgeous burgundy shade called 'crush' from the new matte collection, which also retails at £3.99.

 

To complete the three for two offer, I needed to decide on one final polish. On the Barry M stand they had a picture of a model showing off one particular shade. I fell in love with it and decided that this would be the final shade that I would buy. This polish is part of the Hi-Shine jelly collection and is called 'Guava', also priced at £3.99 in Superdrug.

 

I actually brought another nail polish from Barry M a few weeks ago whilst I was shopping in Cambridge and totally forgot about it. At the time Superdrug were doing a 2 for £6 deal on all their nail polishes and so my friend and I got one each. I picked up this shade called 'blackberry' from the jelly range, saving myself 0.99p!

 

Living in a small town means that my local Superdrug doesn't sell any sleek products. After buying a blush and the contour kit online, I was desperate to get my hands on some of their other products, but wanted to be able to see what I was buying first. Luckily Cambridge had a whole stand of Sleek products, and it's fair to say that I went a little crazy.

 

The first thing that I picked up from Sleek was this gorgeous lipstick in the shade 'barely there.' Although I haven't used this product yet it claims to be a highly pigmented non drying and conditioning lipstick, which sounds pretty good to me! Costing only £4.99 it is also a bit cheaper than some of the other drugstore lipsticks out there so thought it would be worth a try.

 

After buying and falling in love with the Sleek blush in the shade 'flamingo' I decided that I would definitely need to expand my collection. With 11 shades in the collection it wasn't easy to pick just one so I brought two on this occasion, but could have easily brought them all! Oops.

 

I decided to go for two more pink shades, but these are no way near as bright as 'flamingo.' The blush pictured above is a lovely dark pink almost red shade with the slightest bit of shimmer in called 'flushed.' I can't wait to start using it and with it being priced at only £4.49 it is a serious bargain in my eyes.

 

The other blush I picked up for £4.49 was the shade in 'rose gold.' I've seen so many other beauty bloggers and vloggers rave about this shade of product and thought it was about time I got my hands on it too. It contains more shimmer than the other two blushes I have, yet will be a welcome addition to my collection.

 

This is where I think I got a little bit over the top and went a bit crazy with the sleek products. But whilst I was there I decided to pick up one of Sleek's eyeshadow palettes.

 

Typically of Sleek, the have kept their gorgeous black packaging for the palette and I'm so excited to try it out. They have a variety of palettes available but I got the 'Au Naturel 601' palette as I thought it would be one that I'd use the most.

 

Although I haven't used this product yet, I am seriously impressed with it at first glance. The colours inside look absolutely gorgeous and I love the mixture of both matte and shimmery shades in there. I also love the fact that each shade has it's own name and that there isn't one colour in the palette that I don't like. Perhaps the biggest bonus is that this cost only £7.99!

 

 

My final purchase over the past few weeks have been some new make-up brushes. I've had my eye on real-techniques brushes for ages and after receiving some for Christmas I decided to expand my collection. This resulted in a trip to Boots!

 

I decided to purchase the core collection, costing me £21.99. Working out at only about £5 a brush, they are seriously good value for money and even the woman in Boots told me that they are amazing!

Featuring a foundation brush, a brush for concealer, powder and contouring, I'm super excited about using these brushes alongside my new and old purchases, although I don't want to get them dirty! Haha.

Wow, it seems as though I've gone a bit overboard recently on products. One day I will learn to resist. (I hope)

NOTD: Mint Green

Barry M Nail Paint in 'Mint Green'

It will probably be no surprise that I am currently wearing a Barry M nail polish. Question is though, which one is it? With it being September I should probably start to wear more autumnal colours such as burgundy or navy but I want to eek out every last bit of summer by wearing some slightly summery colours.
  I've opted today for a shade by Barry M called 'Mint Green.' As suggested by the name it is a lovely pastel green and is something different from what I would usually wear as I don't have that many green colours in my collection.

As usual, the consistency of this product is lovely and I have applied two coats to make the appearance opaque. The polish is also super affordable at only £2.99 and it lasts a considerable amount of time before you have to remove it because of chips.



Online vs Instore Shopping

The internet has no doubt made aspects of our everyday lives much easier. You can have food and drink delivered to your front door, buy products from another country with a simple click of a button and even watch other people's videos even though you've never met them.
   Shopping is now so quick and simple to do on-line that we are experiencing first hand the effects this has on smaller retailers and stores along the highstreet. There are many advantages and disadvantages to shopping both on-line and instore, which brings up the question of which is better?
    Imagine this, you have a party to attend tomorrow and you are convinced that you have nothing to wear. About 10 years ago, you would be panicking and rushing to your nearest clothing retailer in hopes of finding something last minute. If you couldn't find something you would have to resort back to that dress you've worn to the past 20 events. However, in the modern day, you are able to lay in bed on your tablet and with a few clicks you are at your favourite clothing store. You can browse an entire collection in minutes and if nothing takes your fancy you can pop over to another website and repeat the whole process until something tickles your fancy. You can even have the perfect dress sent to you by the next day and viola, you are set for the party!
  One problem with on-line shopping though is you may think you've found the perfect dress, yet when it arrives it only fits around one of your legs or it completely drowns you, which could have been avoided if you had gotten out of the house and physically gone to the shop to try the thing on. That way you know that it fits you exactly and plus it gives you something to do with your day!  You are also less likely to buy stuff you don't like and are less likely to overspend because you can see exactly what you are buying.
  Admittedly, on-line shopping is much quicker than travelling to the shop in question, and it is a great way to procrastinate or fill time in your day, but shopping in-store can be a social experience, especially because I love having a shopping trip day with my friends.
  You also get to take the product home there and then and don't have to wait around for the late postman on his bike, who turns up to your door at 2pm, only for you to realise that he's got some junk mail and not your dress. In-store shopping eliminates the delivery cost, which you could use to buy a Barry M nail polish.
  All this aside, there tends to be a wider choice available on-line and there are a huge amount of stores that are only on-line nowadays and more importantly, for the first time we can buy something from anywhere in the world and have it shipped to us.
 There are so many opinions on which method of shopping is better, and honestly if asked I couldn't pick between them. I like both methods and each are useful in their own way.

Nail Tutorial: Ombre

It's always exciting when you find a new nail art technique to experiment and try out. The fashion world has gone crazy with everything ombre over the past two years and if your not sure whether or not to try ombre hair, ombre nails are a much quicker, reversible solution for all your ombre needs!

  This effect can take a while to perfect and I am still trying to perfect it myself, so my finished result may not look as amazing as it can do, but it shows that this can be a difficult technique to master. Anyhow, like with other nail effects, you can use pretty much any colour that you want and a contrast between the two colours can make it look really effective.

Items needed to create the ombre nail effect

For this tutorial you will need:

• A base colour
• A different colour to create the ombre effect with
• A small sponge, slightly larger than the size of your nail
• A plastic sheet or poly-pocket
• Something to mix the two colours together such as a toothpick or nail art tool
• Base/Top coat (optional)  

Barry M Nail Paint in Blueberry

Step 1

1. Firstly you need to apply a decent base coat, especially if you are using nail polishes which are likely to stain your nails. Once this is dry, you need to apply a base colour to your nails. For this tutorial I am using the Barry M nail paint in 'Blueberry.' 

Step 2

2. Next, on the sheet of plastic you need to paint a thick layer of the base nail polish onto one side of the sheet. Then next to it as close as possible without allowing the two nail polishes to touch, you need to apply a thick layer of nail polish which will be used to make the ombre effect, as shown above. The nail polish which I am using for the ombre effect is Barry M nail paint in 'Bright Pink.' You will need to make sure that the combined nail polish is the length of your nails to ensure that your nails will be covered effectively. 

Step 3

3. Before the nail polish has time to dry you then take your toothpick or nail art tool and gently mix the two colours together in the middle so you are left with one colour on the left, the mixture of colours in the middle and the other colour on the right. This creates the ombre effect on your nails.

Step 4

4. Next, you need to take the sponge and put it into the nail polish mixture. At this stage you should have the base colour at the bottom of the sponge, and the ombre colour at the top, with the mixture of the two colours in the middle. This is shown below. You will need to work quite quickly to ensure that the nail polish doesn't dry. 

Step 5

5. Once the sponge has been dipped into the mixture, you then press it onto the nail. You need to ensure the top of the sponge is applied to the top of the nail in order to create the ombre effect. You will find at this stage the nails will look rather messy because of the sponge but this will be cleared up later in the tutorial. Repeat this stage until all your nails have been painted, which may mean you might need to apply more nail polish to the plastic sheet.

Step 6

6. Once you have applied the sponge to all of your nails it is important to allow the nail polish to dry. When you are satisfied that it is dry, take a cotton bud and dip it into nail polish remover. Then use the cotton bud to clean up any nail polish which has got onto your cuticles or skin and you have successfully created the ombre nail effect. Using the sponge gives a textured finish, and you can alter the amount of ombre by the amount that you mix the two colours together. At this stage you can also apply a top coat if desired.

NOTD: Lychee

I have really been loving this nail polish from Barry M. I've previously featured this particular one in my 'Top 5 Barry M Nail Polish' post, and it is the shade which I am currently wear on my nails.

 

The shade itself is called 'Lychee' and can be found in most drugstores in the UK such as Boots and Superdrug. This one came from http://www.superdrug.com/barry-m/barry-m-gelly-nail-paint-lychee/invt/612353 and cost £3.99

I really like the neutral shade of this nail paint and it looks really elegant and sophisticated. It also compliments my natural skin tone, and it applies evenly and lump or bubble free to my nails. I find that I always apply two coats of this polish though to ensure maximum coverage.

  It doesn't chip easily and I find the wear is good on this polish which makes it really great value for money. 

I would highly recommend this nail colour to anybody that wants a change from bright colours or if you just want to try something new. You won't be disappointed! 

Nail Tutorial: French Manicure

Although I really love wearing bright block colours on my nails, it is always nice to be able to have a simple manicure. It can enhance your natural nails whilst also makes them look sophisticated and is a quick and easy way to change the way your nails look. Here I have put together a quick tutorial on how to create a perfect French manicure. 

  

Nail Polishes L-R:
Rimmel 60 Seconds: Princess Pink
Barry M: Matt White
Avon: Base Coat

For this look I will be using a natural nail colour for the base and then white for the tips. However you can change up these colours and use any combination, which also looks amazing on the nails. Some examples of other combinations that I've used are red with gold tips, purple with silver tips and blue with red tips.
   To create this particular look you will need a base coat, a base colour and then another colour to use for the tips. In this case I am using the Rimmel 60 Seconds nail polish in 'Princess Pink' for the base, Barry M nail paint in 'Matt White' for the tips and an Avon base coat.

1. Firstly I would cut and file your nails using a clipper and nail file to ensure that all your nails are the same length and evenly shaped. Once you are happy with the length of your nails,apply the base coat and allow to dry. 

2. Next, apply the base colour to your nails. Depending on the coverage of your nail polish you may want to apply two coats but it is important to make sure that you do not make the layers too thick. This is so the nail polish dries and doesn't become tacky or sticky. I've applied 2 coats of the Rimmel nail polish in 'Princess Pink' here.

3. Once the base colour is completely dry, you can then start to do the tips of each nail. My tip for this stage is to take the nail polish brush and use one motion to swipe the brush across the top of the nail. Don't worry if the colour looks patchy at this stage because you can always go back and apply another coat to the tips if necessary. This step may take a bit of practise but don't worry if the tip colour goes onto your skin as it can be easily removed with some nail polish remover. Once you have used the brush to add tips, leave the nails to dry completely. 

4. To make the look last longer and to reduce the chance of chipping you can apply a top coat to this look but it is not necessary. To remove any stray nail polish from your skin, apply some nail varnish remover to a cotton bud and carefully wipe away the nail polish. 

Here is the finished look. Perfect for everyday wear or for special occasions or events, this is a really versatile nail effect and can be achieved using only 3 products and you can easily change the colours which have been used to create your own take on a classic manicure.

September: Wishlist

I love making lists and have always written down exactly what I would like to buy in the coming months. I find that some things are quite a simple purchase whilst others required a fair bit of saving in order to pay for them. I thought that I would share my wishlist which includes all the things I hope to buy in both September and in the coming months.

• Sleek Contour Kit
  I have had my eye on this product throughout the whole summer, yet every time I think that I am going to buy it, another expense to deal with comes along. Therefore I haven't had chance to purchase this product yet but I am really excited about buying it.
• Sleek Blush
  Alongside the contour kit I really would like to buy a blush from Sleek because I have heard some amazing reviews on their products. I am waiting to buy the contour it and blush together and so I think this will be one of my main purchases this month. 

• Real Techniques make up brushes
  There is nothing wrong with the make up brushes that I am currently using, however I am in definite need of a new blush brush and one brand which has really appealed to me is Real Techniques. I think their brushes are reasonably priced and again have heard good things from them.
• Canon 700D camera
  This product is definitely not a target to buy for September, but I will be putting some money aside and saving for this product over the coming months. Whilst there is nothing wrong with my Sony DSLR camera, it is 3 years old now and I think it is time to invest in a camera with more features and the ability to record film as well. I've done some extensive research on this camera and have set myself on buying this so now all that's left to do is save!
• Lipstick
  After experimenting with lip tints during the summer I would love to purchase some more lipsticks to extend my current collection. I will be looking for a few natural shades as well as some deep reds to wear throughout winter. I really like the look of the Kate Moss for Rimmel products and I may even treat myself to a YSL lipstick because I know how amazing they are as my mum uses them regularly.
• The 1975 album
  I've looked on the future released on the play.com website recently and the prospect of this album has stood out to me. I loved the song chocolate and so think this would be a good purchase this month. However, I think I will be giving it a listen on iTunes before buying it myself.
• Pandora charms
  I was very lucky to receive a Pandora charm bracelet for my 18th birthday in August and have been since planning the charms that will eventually fill the bracelet. During September I hope to add at least one more charm to it as I've found buying them to be rather addictive.
• Make up bag
  Recently I've noticed that I can no longer shut my make up bag so have been in need for a new one. I brought one off ebay a few weeks ago, but it was much smaller than I thought it was going to be so the hunt continues!
• Barry M Nail Polishes
  I am always looking at new nail polishes and I plan to continue to extend my collection by purchasing some more shades by Barry M. I am possibly going to try and find some colours which will suit Autumn and Winter so will probably go for darker shades.
• Curling Wand
  Finally, my old curlers decided to blow up a few weeks ago after about 7 years of using them so I was gutted when it happened. They have lasted so well and I think they still make them so I will probably be purchasing a new pair. However I also want to look for a new curling wand and I think I have found one by Remington which has received some good reviews. At £18.50 it is a bargain as well so I hope to buy this and see if it lives up to the reviews!

Haul: Makeup, Nails & Clothing

So last Wednesday I went shopping. I accidentally brought some stuff and thought that I'd share it with you!

Although I went shopping not needing to buy anything in particular, as I was walking around I soon started to find some things which just needed to be bought. The shops are not amazing near where I live and there isn't that much variety due to the town centre being quite small, but I still managed to pick up some bargains and some necessities.

Although I didn't really know what I was looking for, I knew that I needed to buy a new mascara as my current one is starting to get a bit old so I took a trip into boots. Instead of buying the same one again, I chose to try out the falsies mascara by Maybelline as my sister uses it and she recommended it to me. It was also reasonably priced at £7.99 so I thought that it was worth a try.

 As I was walking past the Barry M stand I had to stop to take a look and see if there were any nail polishes which caught my eye. With a bit of money left over from buying the mascara I decided to treat myself to a new nail polish, as usual. The shade that caught my eye this time was another from their 'Hi-Shine Gelly' collection called 'Passionfruit.' It is a really bright red colour and this was the first red that I would have brought from Barry M so I decided to purchase it and it cost £3.99.

  

After visiting Topshop, H&M and New Look I came out with three tops and a skirt. For somebody that didn't need anything I brought quite a lot of stuff. These haven't photographed very well, but I'm still going to show you them anyway!

When I went into Topshop, they still had a small amount of items on one side of the shop. I find looking through sale rails challenging because sometimes there are some lovely pieces and at other times it isn't worth the time looking through it. However when I looked in Topshop last week, I found this dark green skater skirt in the sale. It had been reduced from £16 to £10 and thought this was a bargain. Although summer is almost over, I still think that I will be able to get wear out of this during the autumn with tights and I can always keep it for next year!

When I went into my local H&M I was slightly disappointed with the stuff that they had in there. I had been in there about a month ago just before I went on holiday and found lots of lovely clothes. However, last week I didn't find hardly anything that I liked and the stuff I liked online wasn't in the shop. I did find this baseball style top in there though and this was something different from what I already have and a total bargain at £6.99. I love the grey marl colour and the maroon coloured sleeves and it is slightly oversized so I can easily team it with leggings or jeans.

The other t-shirt I got from H&M is just a simple white short sleeved top from their basics collection. I've previously brought a grey top similar to this one and it is so comfortable I wanted a different colour and because I don't have many, I decided on white. What I love about these t-shirts are the rolled up sleeves as it makes the top look more interesting and again was a bargain at £7.99. This is also oversized because they didn't have my size so I think I'll be wearing it with either jeans or leggings and I can easily wear this throughout the rest of summer and autumn.

My final purchase of the day was from New Look. Recently in their sale I brought two peplum tops, a dark plum purple and dark green and I've found these so versatile that when I saw this red one I had to buy it. I don't have a lot of clothes which are red so this is a nice change from the colours I usually buy and I can wear this on either a night out or during the day in autumn. It was also a total bargain at £8.99.
